VACCINATIONS SERVICES
As a caring owner you want the best for your cat and the vaccination is the first step to protect your cat from severe infectious diseases. By vaccinating your own cat, you also prevent him from passing anything nasty on to other cats in the area. A vaccine is usually given by an injection under the skin, as a single injection at 9 weeks of age and then again 3 to 4 weeks later. This allows the kitten to socialise as early as from 12 weeks of age. It is a preparation designed to provide protection against a specific infectious disease through stimulating an immune response that will protect the cat if it is subsequently exposed to the infection. The vaccination is then repeated annually.

Vaccinating your puppy is the first and most important step to help protecting it against several highly contagious and fatal diseases such as canine distemper, leptospirosis infection and parvovirus infection. Puppies are particularly vulnerable to these serious diseases and if they catch them, they can easily die. Your puppy can be vaccinated as early as about 8-weeks-old and will need a second set of injections, usually 2 or 4 weeks later, depending on the vaccine used. Annual booster vaccinations are then given along with a complete health check examination. Compromising on animal health not only puts the welfare of dogs at risk, it can also leave them vulnerable to severe infections that can also be passed on to people.

As for cats and dogs, also rabbits can be affected by fatal diseases which can be prevented by annual vaccinations. We would always recommend vaccinating your rabbits, whether you keep them outdoors or indoors. This is because many diseases can be spread not only from other animals, but through insects and even your own clothes. Vaccinations can help them fight off diseases that would be fatal without this protection.

Parasite control is an essential part of your cat’s preventative care program. Parasites are easily picked up by our furry friends but luckily, they are generally easy to prevent. As well as being a nuisance, parasites can cause serious health problems and are not to be ignored. Some of the parasites are transmissible to people as well and are referred to as “zoonotic” parasites. For example, flea infestation prevention for your cat can protect the entire family from “Flea Allergic Dermatitis”, caused by the Bartonella bacteria, which is carried by fleas. Also, roundworms can cause vision impairment and blindness in people, especially children. An annual control plan for both external and internal parasites not only protects your cat, but you and your family members as well.

Our dogs are part of the family and you want to make sure they stay healthy. Most dogs will contract a range of internal and external parasite during their lifetime, such as tapeworms, roundworms, fleas and ticks. It is unfortunately very common and sometimes it can lead to severe long-term complications if left untreated. Internal parasites, such as worms, can cause death through heart failure, an intestinal blockage, lungs, liver or even kidney damage. Some parasites are transmissible to people as well and are referred to as “zoonotic” parasites. Keeping your pet and your family safe is extremely important. Simple things like applying regular treatments and hand washing can be effective to reduce the risk of infection and keep everyone safe.

Rabbits can suffer of ectoparasites (external parasites) infestation just as much as cats and dogs do. The symptoms are also similar with mostly being itchy and scratchy, irritated skin, crusts but fur loss is most typical. FlyStrike is also a very common occurrence in rabbit during summertime. It is caused by blowflies which deposit their eggs onto the rabbit’s skin. They are attracted to faecal material, so it is important to check your rabbit daily to ensure that all the fur is clean and dry. Cleaning hutches and changing bedding regularly is important to reduce contamination. Keeping your rabbit fit and healthy is also important because overweight or poorly rabbits with urine scalding or diarrhoea are at a higher risk of developing flystrike.

Neutering is a complex subject and is generally highly recommended is both cats and dogs that are not being used for breeding. Female cats will try to escape and roam when they come into season, which also puts them at risk of accidents or getting lost. Female cats in season will be “calling” throughout day and night until they find a mate, which is very stressful for them and for the everyone around them.

OTHER SERVICES
CONSULTATION
Regular health check-ups are important for the long-term health and welfare of all pets. Routine examinations allow us to take a pro-active role in preventive health care. Actual or imminent health problems will hopefully be spotted earlier, and appropriate treatment or preventive action taken. We carry out a full physical examination and health check as part of the annual booster vaccinations that are recommended for all dogs, cats and rabbits. This is an ideal opportunity to discuss any aspect of your pet’s health or wellbeing that is of concern to you.
DENTAL CARE
Dental disease is one of the most common problems presented in clinical practice. Between 70-80% of cats and dogs over three years old will have some form of dental disease. Prevention is by far the best approach for helping your pet with their dental health. Over time, debris and bacteria build up on the teeth to form plaque and then tartar. The brushing of cats teeth can prove challenging and almost impossible however most dog’s are more acceptable to having their teeth brushed. Brushing teeth from early age is important to keep this accumulation of debris at bay. When the tartar advances to the gum line, it becomes painful and it can lead to inflammation, abscesses and loss of teeth. At this stage your pet will need to be admitted for a professional cleaning which will ensure the infection will not continue into the blood stream potentially affecting other organs. Anaesthesia is necessary when performing teeth cleaning. It enables us to clean beneath the gum line, gives pain control, and in some case to perform painless extractions.
MICROCHIPPING

Can you imagine how awful it would be to lose your pet? The people at BackHome Microchips fully appreciate the distress you may feel if your beloved pet goes missing. That’s why they have put together a proven system to ensure that we do all that we can to reunite you with your pet. A microchip implant is an identifying integrated circuit placed under the skin of a dog, cat, or another animal. The chips are about the size of a large grain of rice and are based on a passive RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. Each microchip carries a registration number that is associated with the owner’s name and contact information. This information is added to a pet registry which can easily accessed by anyone who has found the missing pet. All kennels and veterinary surgeries have these readers and can scan the pet and contact the owner as soon as the pet is found.
